W108 ~ Global Carpet Collage

Create an incredible 30” x 48”global-inspired, vintage-dyed "carpet" wall hanging on Roc-lon canvas. You will have the chance to experiment with a variety of unique techniques that can be translated individually or in combination to create a wide array of exotic wall finishes. We will play with texture, pattern, distressing, metallic foils, and over-dying with translucent stains. You will receive guidance as to technique and pattern placement, but are encouraged to insert your own unique creativity into your artwork. Multiple color options for final dye colors will be provided. Class fee includes 7 different Royal Design Studio stencils to keep, and a tube for transporting your treasure home!

1) A lecture about bas relief, the art form, history, and current day application 2) A demonstration and lecture about designing for jobs and working with clients. 3) Explaining necessary materials, tools and products and their correct uses and applications. 4) Demonstrate working on 3 different stages of a bas relief art piece on a board, 7.5 hour: tree scene and bird 5) Show finished board and how faux finishing can enhance the bas relief. 6) Show a variety of ways to display bas relief art. 7) Students will start a 12” x 12” portfolio board to take home with them. Each student will get a small container of sculpture medium and binder to create the sample board. I will provide the tools and bubble wrap.

W506 ~ All That Glitters: Basic Gilding

Learn to gild! Using various kinds of leaf, mica powder and foils, students will produce 8 sample boards showcasing various kinds of applied metal leaf. Using silver, copper, aluminum and other specialty materials, you will cut, apply, distress, and patina various designs, and produce a "teaching" board to use to educate your clients. One of the boards will be glass, and students will have a chance to try reverse gilding. This is a fast-paced, fun class. Students take home leaf, a stencil, gilders tip, gelatin, recipes and written instructions.

Beautiful boards are even more beautiful when they sell! Although the finishes in this class may look difficult, and therefore expensive to your clients, they are actually the best sellers. These tried and true finishes are requested over and over again, and have been carefully developed to make you money. Taking cues from the design showrooms of Chicago these 8 finishes will encompass the latest sought after wall trends. Each will have a background that can stand alone, but are further embellished to give you a two for one board! We will be using production tools and tricks that will make the job go quickly and with ease. We will do boards using plasters, metallics, patterns, glitter and gems, setting you far apart from your competition. Each student will receive a comprehensive binder with formulas and material lists. Also included in the class will be a sample stencil from the newest collection and a glass sample to take home.

Create 4 sides of a frame in trompe l'oeil. Using a striping edge and specialized striping brushes, students will quickly gain confidence in making clean, straight, and faded lines. Students will learn how and where to place highlight and shadow and create the illusion of 3-D. Use that knowledge to create your own frame. Make this a portfolio piece to show your versatility. Bring true definition, depth, and beauty to your work by learning how to do low (bas) relief and high (alto) relief. In this class you'll create 4 sample boards - Byzantine Wall Frieze, a cabinet door made to look like sculpted Iron, a 20" x 24" bas relief grape vine, and a 20" x 24" high relief mountain scene. Through the high relief you'll learn to sculpt trees, mountains, lakes, animals and birds using plaster. You'll also be learning the entire process of mold-making which will save you countless hours in production time. You'll learn some cabinetry refinishing, glazing and plastering techniques as well.

How light and shadow fall on molding, a relief, or an ornament is the key to understanding trompe l'oeil. Watch as Pierre gives his lecture on the illusion of 3-D. He'll break down every profile and simplify them with drawings and explanation. You will learn how to mix half-tone and highlight color. Once you have learned his simple yet thorough steps, you will be able to apply shadow and highlights on ANYTHING (molding, ornament, figures, etc.).

Students will create a hand painted sample on a small wooden board (16" x 20"). We will cover the techniques for preparing and base coating furniture with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint, and how to mix a limited color palette that works harmoniously. Examples of adapting designs for furniture, making delicious color palettes from fabric swatches, and composing ornaments will be discussed. Students will learn techniques for creating effective shadow and line work with surprisingly few colors and brushstrokes. Water based casein paints will be used for the hand painted ornament. Furniture finishing, waxing and patinas will be discussed.

Is the sky always blue? What about the rest of the room? In this intensive workshop you will learn techniques for painting cloudscapes in any color desired, from sunny and serene to stormy and dramatic, designing color palettes for tailoring the mural to the room and its decor. On two 48" x 36" panels, learn techniques for painting colorful, expressive cloud murals easily and quickly while practicing at full scale. Finishers and muralists alike will benefit from this class. Each participating artist will design and paint two unique colorful cloud ceilings.

Move beyond stenciling with an in-depth approach to creating your own trompe l'oeil borders for your decorative work. All levels of students are welcome to this workshop, though it's probably a good idea to have some experience with acrylics and drawing. We'll be painting a simple egg-and-dart molding that can be translated into many different applications and colors. Using acrylic paints, we will create 3 different color ways (gold, antique bronze, and stone) as we talk about the underlying principles of ornamental painting. Students will leave with a kit of brushes and a finished board with three presentation samples.

Cabinetry should look and feel like fine furniture. If yours doesn't, then you need the Cabinet Master Class! Learn pro techniques to master the fastest growing sector of our industry. 6 wood samples will be completed by each student to build their portfolio. We'll also cover additional finishes during demos. Extensive lecture time will cover prep, estimating, marketing, product knowledge, spraying, toning, glazing, and more. No other class can offer this much insight into cabinet and furniture finishing. There will be some spraying in class using waterborne lacquers in a designated corner of the class. In the class with Artisan Mindy Harrell, you will complete 10 mixed medium strike-offs and one piece of canvas art. While a blank canvas holds all the possibility in the world creatively, this workshop will offer a way to begin a piece of artwork. The concept for this class was to inspire the decorative artisan in how to create professional art, using existing techniques they possess and incorporate them into another profitable market. S805 ~ Gilding Techniques Simplified

Students will work on four small wooden molding samples. Each one is an example of various different uses and combinations of decorative gilding techniques. We will use traditional materials like gesso, bole, and casein paint in combination with modern materials like acrylic gold size, acrylic paints and glazes. The combination of old and new techniques allows us to obtain rich effects within modern time restraints. The teacher has many years of professional gilding experience and can share tips and techniques that work effectively on wooden frames, plaster moldings or walls.

S115 ~ Casein and Chalk Paints for Furniture

Students will create a stenciled sample board and several small wooden moldings with various examples of finishes for furniture. We will cover the techniques for preparing and base coating furniture with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint, and how to make a monochromatic palette or grey scale. We will apply a design to the sample panel using an original stencil, which can later be re-used and adapted for other projects. Waxing and antiquing techniques will be discussed. Favorite examples of well loved European furniture finishes will be covered such as Shabby Chic, Gustavian, and Crème Paint.
