T103 - Opulent Oriental Panel

The workshop will teach a simple fabric effect using glaze over which a succession of stencils and masks will be employed. All over pattern and overlays combine with soft metallic finishes to create a sumptuous panel which will roll for ease of carrying. The stencils for this project work independently of each other; alternate uses for them will be demonstrated during class. The project uses the stencil tool to mask and frame elements of decoration elevating them to become a stand alone art piece. IDAL is the only place to take a class with Helen in the USA this year.

T212 - Path in Antiquity and Aged Map

Students will complete two 16" x 20" panels on a wood sub straight with attached frame. On each panel, Proceed by Golden cracking plasters will be used. Students will learn about various Proceed plasters, colorants and glazes. Panel one will be plastered and a sepia tone scene of "Path in Antiquity" will be painted and glazed. Mural techniques to be explained include light source, perspective and painting foilage. Panel two will get a paper map application and through the use of cracking plasters, glazes and subtle raised stencil an aged effect will be achieved.

Watch your designs pop while practicing applications of shadow and light to grisaille work.Class will begin with a lecture and demonstration followed by the transfer of the image using transfer paper onto canvas and then basecoated.Nicola will guide you through the process of painting cast shadows and brushstrokes as well as applying different tonal values to build volume using acrylics.The excercises learned in this class will add value to your business and to any surface including walls, ceilings, and furniture.

Turn glass into a work of art!Verre Eglomis is gilding on glass, and we will cover all you need to know to create beautiful backsplashes, glass tiles, glass furniture panels and fine art. Using real 23K gold leaf, we will apply the gold to glass, then draw and etch into the gold to create your design.We will then color the design, and you will create your own awesome backgrounds using paint, washes, foil, glitter, mica, other metal leaf, and more. Learning Verre Eglomise is an awesome way to upscale and upgrade your portfolio offerings.Students will make a 12" x 12" glass sample with a mirror finish gold design and colorful background, and will be able to experiment on subway tile size pieces of glass as well as 4" x 4" squares of glass.

Each student will create one 16" x 20" custom tile and one 20" leaf bowl using Perma Pro Concrete products. Students will learn the art of using molds to create one of a kind designs and how to use molds for 3-dimensional elements in tile sculpting. Students will learn how to create multiple layers of texture using stamps, stencils, and carving tools. Each student will use a custom leaf mold to create a 20" long bowl. Students will learn concrete coloring techniques for each project using concrete stains and alcohol dyes. Students will learn how to get patina and metal effects using stains, dyes, and mica for realistic patina.Students will learn how to install custom tiles, how to protect them with sealers and how to price for a profit.

What we really want are amazing sellable finishes that turn us a great profit. What we are teaching is our most profitable sellable designer finishes. Requested most often are what we call rustic luxe. Softly aged and very glamorous. Using textures, lusters and foils, stencils, modellos and word quotes, we create boards you can sell every day. Students will learn up to 8 finishes on baseboard-sized samples. Basic veining, breching, and stone textures will be the core lessons along with proper preparation and varnishing instructions. Some finishes will include:white carerra marble, sea green, red griotte, yellow flower, travertine, and granite. Learn how to match an existing marble/stone mantle or millwork. Techiques using American Clay, Fend Finish Natural Wax, pure lime putty lime wash, natural flake mica and metallic pigments.These materials will be used to make walls that will astound at the flexibility while still providing a healthy environment.Students will make organic samples creating leaf and feather imprints, aromatic walls, and a cast concrete wall finish.Fades or blends using the plaster, and finishing with metallic and pigmented wax.This is an American Clay course unlike any else created especially for the IDAL Convention.

Although this class is geared toward decorating furniture and small projects the skills learned will apply to larger projects. Stenciling with paint, metal leaf and glaze we will experiment with a collection of corner, border, repeat and spot motif stencils to create panels, circlets and overall pattern. This is a useful class whether you paint furniture for fun, profit or host workshops. Special attention is given to corners, symmetry and contrast panels. Simple fantasy finishes and decoupage will be demonstrated. Assorted Stencil Library stencils rv. $88 are included in fee. A minimum of two samples will be created after experimentation on paper.
