W305 - Corner Ceiling Ornament

By adding ornamentation, among other faux treatments, the ceiling can come alive and become the showpiece for the room. In this class, students will focus and create an ornamentation element on canvas. The design will be pounced to the surface and then base coated. Students will then place the shadow layers and highlights to make the design come to life. Pierre will walk you through the steps, ensuring you can follow them at home. This is part of one of a full two-day Corner Ceiling Ornament & Trompe L'oeil class. Please note you can choose to take only the first or second day. Refer to Trompe L'oeil Faux Molding and Striping for the second part of the two-day class.

W506 - Furniture Master

Learn pro tricks of the trade to refinish furniture as well as repair and touch-up damaged furniture. This class is geared for the serious professional wanting to add furniture finishing to their repertoire. Learn toning and glazing, graining and shading, prep and clear coating. Students will complete six classic furniture finishes similar to those shown in picture on 12" wooden moldings. Be ready for selling your newly acquired discipline! We'll use waterborne lacquers with some spraying in class, mostly for demonstration purposes. Come with an open mind and willingness to learn new and profitable techniques. Henri has over 25 yrs experience and has finished over 800 furniture and cabinet jobs. Finishes are guaranteed to impress you!!

W510 - Basic Glass Gilding

Students will learn the basics of gilding on glass to create mirror-like finishes. While traditional glass gilding involves use of solvent-based materials, you will learn the basics of applying and manipulating gold, silver, and composition leaf on the reverse surface of glass. You will learn how to plan your pattern, apply leaf to glass, etch and manipulate your leafed surface to create shadows and patterns, and will then apply additional layers. You will be given instructions and materials for using solvent based backing paints for the glass patterns. Due to convention restrictions, students will not be able to use solvent based paints. We will, however, use alternate water based options to give contrast and depth to your patterns. Students may choose an alternate design or do a design of their own. Students have the option to purchase the gilding tools used in class (gilders knife and gilders top) for an additional fee.

Muralists and finishers alike will find value in this class which will show the process of layering reactive iron based paint along with stenciled designs into a piece of art. In this course you will create an 18" x 24" rusty floral painting on panel. You will learn tricks to enhance your ability to paint an object accurately and quickly. You will also learn application techniques and color theory that will translate to every painting you do allowing you to loosen up your brushstrokes and breathe new life into your work. Expand your market beyond the mural and create gallery worthy fine art for clients you are already working with!

T305 - Trompe L'oeil Faux Molding and Striping (Compliment to Corner Ceiling Ornament)

This is part two of the full two-day Corner Ceiling Ornament & Trompe L'oeil Class, though; you can choose to take only the first or second class individually. In this class you will enhance your ornamentation with trompe l'oeil profiles and striping. Students will learn to create faux molding, coffers, and profiles by placing correct highlights and shadows, and using a striping edge. Pierre will walk you through Steps, ensuring you can follow them at home.

Students will learn to handle genuine gold and silver leaf, composition leaf, and mica powders. You will cut and apply leaf to various surfaces, learning techniques for application on carved surfaces, and stenciling applications. Students will learn the classic fresco process from start to finish from renowned artist Ilia Anossov. Topics covered include plaster preparation and application, fresco plaster layers and mixture variations, natural pigments and fresco paintvpreparation, creation of the fresco cartoon, transfer techniques, painting on wet plaster, multi-layer application, aging of the completed fresco. Student will create 1 to 2 16" x 16" multi-layer buon fresco. iLia will provide information about taking fresco from it's ancient origins to a modern interior.

Grisaille landscapes are a classic, sophisticated, and timeless mural theme that everyone loves! Learn landscape painting basics such as how to block in value, light and shadow, simplify leaf and tree shapes, and indicate distant foliage and create grassy areas in the foreground during this exciting and fun one day class. Students will create a 16" x 20" painting of a landscape mural sample section on canvas using Golden Fluid Acrylics. S305 - Faux Marquetry - Inlaid Wood

The actual art of Marquetry is a pain-staking process that commands a high price. By creating the look of inlaid wood with paint, you can offer your clients an economical alternative. This class will lead you through the process of creating an attractive faux inlaid pattern. Students will learn how to mix the colors to achieve the luminosity for woods such as Rosewood, Maple, Feather Mahogany, and Walnut. This design will translate well to furniture and small, wall panels. Add this simple technique to your portfolio and show your diversity in faux painting!

A new look at modern with a twist of vintage playfulness. In some samples we will be using only paint to create a soft vintage look with word sayings and elegant aged stenciling. This is a top selling sample with little effort and optimum results. Other samples will capture the look with luster and foil. In the modern category, we see a lot of grass cloths. Students will create these with a major wow factor to capture a designers attention. All are designer finishes with maximized selling features. We will play with texture, foils, luster products, stencils and vinyl word sayings...typography. We will discuss all possibilities and use of products, keeping the execution simple for maximum results.

Conquering the portrait can be one of the most challenging and rewarding projects any artist takes on. The ability to do it well will bring your portfolio to a higher level of sophistication and open the door to new opportunities. In this lecture and demonstration, Ali will create a large scale life-like portrait while she explains each brushstroke and color selection. Techniques such as image transfer, reference photo editing, brushwork, and complimentary color underpainting will be discussed. Anyone with an appreciation for art will find this class informative and inspiring. You don't have to be a muralist!
