ARTISPHERE SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
ARTISPHERE brings the world of art and artisans to your mailbox four times a year with articles, news, and features for artists at every skill level.
ARTISPHERE measures 8 1/8" x 10 7/8", is full color, contains 48 pages, and is staple-bound.

IDAL will reprint selected features from the print edition of ARTISPHERE at
http://www.decorativeartisans.org. A “teaser” will appear on the home page, and the body of the article will be in the members-only area of the web site. By submitting material to ARTISPHERE, you are agreeing to allow publication of your work on the IDAL web site as well as print publication in ARTISPHERE magazine.

MANUSCRIPTS
- Member News—Awards, achievements, unusual or noteworthy projects of individual IDAL members or groups of members. Length: 50 to 150 words.
- Chapter News—Activities and accomplishments of local IDAL chapters. Length: 50 to 150 words. Please include photo(s).
- Industry News—New products, events, and changes in the decorative arts industry.
Length: 50 to 150 words with picture; 50 to 200 words without picture.
- “Ask the Experts”—Professional questions on any aspect of decorative painting to be answered in an upcoming issue.
- “How I Solved It”—Difficulties encountered on a professional decorating job and how they were overcome. Length: up to 200 words. Please include photo(s).
- How-to Articles—Step-by-step instructions for an original project or technique, with photos of work in progress. Length: 200 to 800 words.
- Business for Artisans—Policies, pricing, marketing, client relationships, studio
management, best practices. Length: 200 to 800 words.
- Feature Articles—Groundbreaking projects; landmark events; expert articles on art history, genres, and other relevant areas. Be sure to tell what makes this subject noteworthy. Length: 500 to 1500 words. Please include photos.
- Letters to the editor—What you think . . . what you like . . . what you wish for IDAL or for Artisphere. Length: up to 100 words.
- Guest editorials—Opinion pieces of 100 to 350 words.
ARTISPHERE does not accept articles that in the judgement of the editorial board appear to be unpaid advertisements for products or services.
HOW TO SUBMIT TEXT:
- Paste text only into the body of an email. Please remove page numbers, headers, footers, and unusual formatting before sending. Email to Artisphere@boxingdaybooks.com.
- Specify whether the submission is exclusive or is being sent to more than one publisher, and tell us if it has been previously published in print or online.
ART AND PHOTOGRAPHS:
- Bulletin Board background—A full-page presentation of a decorative finish is featured behind the notices on page 5 of Artisphere. Size: 2600 x 3400 pixels.
- Photos accompanying news or articles—Each one needs to be 300 dpi at 100% size. If your camera lets you choose pixel settings, use 2475 x 3300. If not, just use the highest quality available on your camera. Please include names of any individuals shown.
HOW TO SUBMIT GRAPHICS:
- Email low-resolution pictures when submitting text.
- When your submission is being prepared for publication, the Artisphere editor will provide a link and password to our ftp site where you can upload hi-res photos, illustrations, and other graphics.
PAYMENT
No payment is made for news items.
Contributors of feature, how-to, and business articles receive:
- Two copies of the issue containing contributor’s work (subscription copy and one extra);
- Head shot and bio in “Contributors Gallery” of the issue;
- Print-quality pdf of the article that may be used for contributor’s self-promotion.
RESPONSE TIME
We’ll acknowledge receiving your submission within a week, although we may not read it that soon. If you don’t receive an acknowledgment, feel free to resubmit.
Please allow up to six weeks for us to read and consider a feature article.
TIP FROM THE EDITOR
What’s the difference between a news article and a feature article and a how-to?
- The news article reports what you did;
- the feature article shows why what you did is unique;
- the how-to article shows how someone else can do something similar to what you did.
For example,
- “I just completed a huge restoration project” is news;
- “I just completed a huge restoration project for which I developed a new way of
reproducing an antique finish, and this is how I did it” is a feature.
- “Here’s how you can reproduce an antique finish the way I did” is a how-to article.
