IDAL Certification: Progressive Stenciling Excellence

SALI Certification Lori Wilson with her passing piecesCertification through the International Decorative Artisans League validates our Members' training and education in the decorative arts. Members apply for certification as a way to set a higher standard for their work, and artisans can point to their professional certification proudly when clients ask for qualifications beyond the sample boards.

Four levels of certification are available.  There are two entry levels to Certification to choose from, the Certified Stenciler (CS) or the Certified Stenciling Artisan (CSA).

CERTIFIED STENCILER (CS)
Wood, wall and fabric samples must be completed for this initial level of certification.

CERTIFIED STENCILING ARTISAN (CSA)
As with its counterpart, the Certified Stenciler (CS), the applicant’s technical abilities; measuring, placement, as well as design and color coordination, are juried.  However, the CSA program was created to allow the Certification candidate more artistic freedom in creating a unique design concept.

CERTIFIED STENCILING TEACHER (CST)
Over 200 teaching hours along with lesson plans, photos, and descriptions of visual aids are required. Additionally, former students will be asked to return a written critique.

CERTIFIED MASTER STENCILER (CMS)
Each artist's imagination is challenged at this level. Applicants are juried on the basis of their creativity, inventiveness, and skilled approach to the coordination of colors and designs. Only truly outstanding work meets this standard of stenciling excellence.

Applicants for this designation must have over 1,000 hours of time as an instructor. Lesson plans for an advanced stenciling class must be submitted, along with visual aids. Additionally, a minimum of 10 students who have completed the described advanced stenciling class are asked to return a written critique on the class.

Requirements for certification are challenging, but not without their rewards. Members who have achieved these designations can be found in the certified members page. Additional information can be obtained in the certification guidelines section and an application for certification is also available online.
