WELCOME TO PORTLAND, OREGON

I look forward to welcoming you to the 25th Annual IDAL Convention & Exposition.  The Board of Directors has made many terrific changes to make this year’s convention a great investment for attendees, instructors, and exhibitors alike.  We have planned an exciting convention with a great set of classes starting Thursday and running through Sunday.

Plan to attend the Annual General Meeting on Thursday night to kick off the festivities followed by a celebration of our 25th year with bubbly.  Then, move on to the Expo Grand Opening and Welcome Reception hosted by Roman Architectural Finishes.

Spend Friday at our inaugural FREE (to pre-registered attendees) Speakers Series.  Don’t worry, you will still have plenty of time to visit all of our exhibitors on Friday afternoon as well as between classes on Saturday.

Throughout the week, work with fellow artisans on the Philanthropic mural project in support of The William Temple House.  This will be the fourth mural donated by IDAL to a local group in need of art and designed by one of our members.  All are welcome to paint.

A big thank you to everyone who has made this convention possible through hours of hard work.  I would like to particularly thank our host chapter – Cascade Artisans Guild – for all their pre-convention help and expertise.  And thank you to you, the attendees, instructors and exhibitors.  Without you there would be no convention.  Have fun planning your week and please feel free to take a minute to say “hi”.

See you in Portland, Oregon!
Amy Ketteran, IDAL President

IDAL Convention Tour hosted by Cascade Artisans Guild

TOUR THE GRANDEUR OF OREGON!

IDAL Mount Hood – Columbia Gorge Tour hosted by the Cascade Artisans Guild
Wednesday, July 21st, 2010
8:30AM – 5:30PM

See the grandeur of Oregon on this custom tour just for IDAL convention attendees!  Be inspired by the rugged Oregon terrain – a photo opportunity not to be missed!

Travel to Mount Hood and Timberline Lodge (www.timberlinelodge.com).  The lodge stands on the south slope of Mt. Hood (the summit elevation is 11,245 feet) at 6,000 feet - a beautiful 55,000 square-foot national, historic landmark, still used for its original intent – as a magnificent ski lodge and mountain retreat.  Not everyone thought it could be done – build a ski lodge near the top of Oregon’s tallest mountain at the brutal height of the Great Depression, but build it they did – entirely by hand, inside and out – from massive timbers and rock found in the wilderness.  The builders were unemployed craftspeople hired by the Federal Works Progress Administration (WPA).  Timberline Lodge is a tribute to their skills and a monument to a government that responded to the needs of its people in a desperate time.  Ground broke on June 14, 1936 and work was completed amazingly quickly, rushed due to extreme weather conditions and the uncertainty of the WPA’s future.  President Franklin Roosevelt dedicated the Lodge on September 28, 1937.

At the Lodge, the IDAL tour group will be given a 45 minute tour by a United States Forest Service Guide, which will include examples of Cascadian architecture, native materials and the old world quality that created a unique and truly regional style known as Cascadian.  Three decorative themes including wildlife, Native American, and pioneer appear in the stone, wood, iron and textiles throughout the Lodge.  Following the Lodge tour, a catered sit down lunch in the Hood Room overlooking the mountain will feature a choice of chicken, salmon or beef with a salad, coffee or tea.  Following lunch, the tour will ride the 1000-foot “Magic Mile” chair lift up the mountain for amazing views of the Cascade Mountain Range, including Mt. Jefferson and the Three Sisters Mountains to the south.

Back on the charter bus, the IDAL tour will continue on a drive through the orchards of the Hood River Valley (www.hoodriverfruitloop.com) while enjoying Oregon Pinot Noir and handmade chocolates.  Continuing on through the Columbia Gorge will take us to Multnomah Falls (www.multnomahfallslodge.com) and Crown Point (www.vistahouse.com) for more amazing views of the local landscape.  The tour will return to the Convention Center around 5:30 PM leaving you enough time to pick up your Registration Packet!

Cost: $95.00 per person
Ticket: Your tickets will be held for you and your name will be on a list prior to boarding the tour bus.

Space is limited to 49 seats.  Sign up on the Registration form found on the Convention Brochure page.

TICKETS MUST BE PURCHASED NO LATER THAN MAY 15, 2010.

DIRECTIONS AND TRANSPORTATION

IDAL PHILANTHROPIC MURAL PROJECT

The William Temple House  www.williamtemplehouse.org

Bring your brushes to the lobby of the convention center on Thursday and Friday, to be a contributor to this year’s philanthropic mural project.  It is a wonderful way to volunteer, alone or with a friend, to form new friendships, to network and to have fun doing something worthwhile and lasting.

The mural project is not restricted to IDAL members.  Exhibitors, guests and community members are invited to grab a brush and participate.  Supplies and materials are all donated, so everyone has the opportunity to participate.

IDAL’s Philanthropic recipient this year is The William Temple House.
William Temple House restores hope and renews strength in individuals and families in a welcoming and respectful atmosphere.  The Foundation for William Temple House was established in early 1965.  They named their center in honor of William Temple, the late Archbishop of Canterbury and prolific author on Christian social action.  A short time after the counseling center was launched William Temple House expanded its role to include emergency material and financial assistance for individuals and families in crisis.  Since 1965, William Temple House has served Portland by providing help where it is needed on behalf of the disadvantaged and distressed in the community. Much more information about this deserving nonprofit organization can be found on their website.
To schedule volunteer times, please contact Kara McGhee, Philanthropic Chair, at kara@karamcghee.com

The schedule will be posted at the philanthropic painting area.  Come prepared to participate!

CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS

Volunteering at convention provides many opportunities to network, have fun and form new friendships, as well as catch up with old friends.  Here’s how it works:

  • Communicate:  Make sure your email address and your contact phone number are accurate on your registration form.
  • Indicate:  Tell us how, when and how much you would like to volunteer.  Fill out the Volunteer section of the registration form.
  • Send in your Volunteer Form along with your convention registration.  It helps to schedule when you sign up ahead of time plus helps you plan your week.
  • The Volunteer Chair will check your schedule for open times and match with your volunteer preferences.  If you indicate that you are available to monitor a class, it will be assigned once your volunteer hours have been scheduled.
  • When the Convention Volunteer Schedule has been determined, you will be contacted BY EMAIL with your volunteer assignments.  Your volunteer assignments will also be included in your Registration Packet at Convention.
  • Monitor Opportunities.  Monitoring is a privilege and comes with a price of volunteer hours.  In order to be considered for monitoring, you must be a fully paid registrant, sign up for and work a minimum of 4 hours (not included as monitor), and have paid for a minimum of 1 class. An audit fee will apply that is 10% of the class price.  This fee must be paid upon receipt of your registration packet.
  • Not all classes need monitors.  Those classes that do not have monitors are: lecture classes (unless the monitor has paid for and is registered in the class), hands on classes with enrollment of less than 12 persons, classes whose instructors request no monitors or who bring their own monitors.
  • In order to volunteer or monitor you must be fully registered for convention.
