2019 IDAL Convention: October 14th - 19th

We are delighted to offer IDAL members this amazing experience at the Hilton Charlotte University in Charlotte, North Carolina for the 2019 IDAL Convention. How excited are you to visit High Point Market, and be up close and personal with all the New Trends? Are you ready to network with other Decorative Painters from across the country and the globe? Want new finish ideas to reload your inspiration catalogue? How about diving into the industry genius pool and learn some new business concepts?

We have many exciting events happening during the IDAL Convention and can't wait to share them with you soon! From Tuesday through Thursday, there are a variety of workshops and seminars. Below you will see the list of courses from industry icons from around the world. There are several 2 hour sessions, and numerous one- and two-day decorative paint learning options in various categories that are sure to help expand your techniques and overall business skills.

Once classes are purchased they are non-refundable.  The purchaser is responsible for reselling the class and exchange of funds.   Places to post the resale of classes could happen in the members only forum on the IDAL website or on the IDAL Facebook page or privately.


CLASSIFICATION OF CLASSES

Classes are offered at different levels of difficulty. Choose classes that are in keeping with your skill level. Refer to the following guidelines:

Beginner: Taught at a pace that allows time for teacher assistance.
Intermediate: Taught at a pace that allows for limited teacher assistance. 
Advanced: Taught at a pace with very limited teacher assistance.
Lecture/Demonstrations:  This designation is designed for the discourse of a subject or a showing of a product, technique, or service to an audience or class.

In our Intro to Resin, Walls, FLOORS & Countertops class, we will show you the basics of resurfacing your existing walls and countertops with our products. You will receive extensive hands on training, and gain tremendous value from this class, as you will be able to make multiple samples to take home and show to potential clients. You will be trained by a professional on how to mimic stone countertops, how to use our unique wall epoxy system, and techniques that will help you cater exactly to your clients needs. We will discuss the floor epoxy system, but no floor samples.  The class will show you the entire installation process of both products from start to finish so you will leave feeling ready to start your first job.  We will introduce a new product to our line, True Metal.

Glitzy Glam Rock

GlamRock is a beautiful technique that can be installed almost everywhere. It's not Paint!!  It's not Plaster!!  It’s Mica!!!  In this hands-on workshop, you will learn how to apply GlamRock to walls, ceilings and create custom artwork.  I will teach you how to infuse Diamond Glass into a GlamRock finish as well as Glitter, Metallics, and Foil. You will be creating 5 Metallic Glam Rock samples and 2 Glam Rock art samples with a total of 7 sample boards. This training class will cover:

  1. The installation of GlamRock on ceilings, walls and Art.
  2. Students create 7 GlamRock samples.
  3. Students will learn how to combine different mediums to custom tint GlamRock. 
  4. How to topcoat GlamRock Finishes.

Right Brain Loves Left

This class focuses on the right brain working with the left in two aspects: social media and business. The first half of the class will be on creating your own signature style on social media by curating a cohesive look using both your right and left brain. The second half of the class focuses on crafting a cohesive organizational plan for your business, including creating and managing a digital media library, managing your time for effectiveness, apps and software for productive management, and more.

Grisaille Ornament

During this class students will learn how to make a cartoon and pounce pattern via lecture.  Students will then pounce the design onto a 14”x38” prepared surface of cambric cloth.  Students will paint the panel in an “Italian chiaroscuro style” trompe l’oeil painting technique.  The step by step techniques will allow the student to learn how to create a grisaille trompe l’oeil in order to produce custom samples for their clients.

Tools to Bring
Assorted acrylic artist brushes. Instructor uses rounds in various sizes, liner brush, ½” flat brush, ½” or less angle brush, a scruffy small blending brush, wooden striping edge, mahl stick or hand support, small water container, paper towels, palette (Styrofoam plates) pen, pencil, light water color pencil, 7 small dixie cups or a beading tray with closable lids, press ‘n seal.

Golden Paintworks: Classics and Beyond

Come along with Golden Paintworks for a workshop that includes both lucrative and new classics with Slow-drying Fluid Acrylics, Metallic Textures, and Weathered Granite. You will learn how to create metallic and stone-like textures with patterns, and also create one of the hottest looks in the wallcoverings market, a versatile, watercolor technique for walls and more. This technique could easily translate to creating botanicals, large scale abstracts and more. You will work on a large panel that will help imitate larger surfaces for the watercolor-like techniques and also use textures to add dimension to otherwise ordinary graphics. Three samples will be produced for your portfolio with Golden Paintworks products.

Glass Bead Gels are gorgeous products that create incredible, shimmery finishes. This class will teach you how to work with Glass Bead Gels in both classic and creative ways, as well as provide usable tips for on the job production. You'll learn how to create a flat, even layer of beads as well as layer them over artwork and stenciling and how to create patterns, stria and graphics. Glass Bead Gels easily add glamour and luster to any project, and you can easily add them to your portfolio. The class will produce 4-5 samples using Golden Paintworks products.

Cosmopolitan Chic - Gorgeous Walls that Captivate

Hands on; 6 samples on canvas. This class will rejuvenate your business with easy to do, drop-dead gorgeous pattern finishes using Wallovers allover stencils.  Using new color combinations that are trending in the field, students will learn finishes that look complex, yet only take 2 or 3 layers to complete. Wallpaper is back and every designer is selling it -  which presents a huge opportunity to show them some amazing hand-painted, patterned wall finishes! Your painted samples will look just like the finest wallpaper. Students will use simple techniques that combine metals, paints and plasters and will have access to over 45 “wallpaper like” stencil patterns. Leave this class with 6 samples and knowledge to tackle and price the job and a whole lot of inspiration!

- 3“ chip brushes (two)
- Steel blades (wider one if possible)
- Steel trowel
- ruler (for perfection: optional)

Jim and Ellie will also demonstrate how to install these walls from start to finish during class.  Each student will make two 19.5” x 19.5” sample boards to take home, plus work on the demonstration wall in class to gain working experience. Every student will receive one large tile mold to take home.

A follow up to her sold out workshop in 2017, Barb is back to share even more of her secrets for creating professional-quality furniture finishes quickly and effortlessly with easy-to-use Annie Sloan products, including Chalk Paint® decorative paint.  In this hands-on class you’ll learn how to paint worn, chipped, and naturally aged finishes as well as distressed finishes with lots of heavy uneven texture, and how to use various colored and metallic waxes as an artistic finishing medium.  You’ll leave with beautiful samples that will amaze both the hand and the eye.

Tools to bring
Students should bring their basic supplies, including an oval paint brush (preferably an Annie Sloan Chalk Paint® Brush), a brush for applying wax (preferably an Annie Sloan Wax Brush), several 2” chip brushes, and one or two ½” flat artist brushes.
